Gloria Jean’s Coffees awarded best foreign franchise, best in franchising support

Emerging as one of the world’s fastest growing franchises and a most recognized coffee house brand globally, Gloria Jean’s Coffees has again reaped recognition as one of the top franchises available, this time, here in the country. Included in the 2007 selection of Entrepreneur magazine’s Annual Franchise Awards, Gloria Jean’s Coffees was adjudged one of the Best Foreign Franchises and Best in Franchising Support.

As best foreign franchise, Gloria Jean’s Coffees was one of the five companies given the award this year “not only for making their franchise concept work remarkably well in the local market but also for significantly growing their business in the country.”

While for the best in franchising support citation, Gloria Jean’s Coffees joined nine other local and foreign franchising companies in the list of winners for the category. The citation recognized these companies’ “exceptional support systems that have helped ensure the success of their franchisees in running the business” and “for providing their franchisees with continuous training, marketing assistance, and pre-opening and ongoing support as well as for their fidelity to their obligations in the franchise agreement.”

A total of 27 franchises made it to the list of awardees in the magazine’s five competition categories. The franchises were rated based on their business viability, system stability, growth potential, and extent of franchisor support. Other criteria taken into consideration included years in the business and in franchising, start-up costs, percentage of terminations, litigation, and membership in franchise associations. Foreign franchise companies cited in the awards met the minimum requirements that these must be master franchisees offering sub-franchises in the Philippines and have been operating for at least two years, with a minimum of five sub-franchisee-owned territorial units.

Specialty Beans Philippines Inc. holds the local master franchise for Gloria Jean’s Coffees and currently has close to 40 stores in Luzon and in the Visayas. With the coffee chain growing continuously in key cities across the country, the company is targeting a total of 50 stores by yearend, doubling the number by 2009. Expanding the network to Mindanao, initially in Cagayan de Oro and Davao, is also being eyed.

Investment in a Gloria Jean’s franchised outlet ranges from an estimated P2 million for an 8-square meter cart set up, P3 million for a 20-40 sq.m. kiosk, to P4.5 million for a full-sized store with a minimum 50 sq.m. area.
